A message from The Soil Association

Can you help Gordon Brown go organic and eat a planet-friendly breakfast?

During Organic Fortnight we're asking everyone to help Gordon Brown 'Wake Up!' to the benefits of organic food and farming, by feeding him an organic breakfast.

Typically organic farming uses 30% less energy, so organic food is 'planet-friendly' food.

The Government knows this fact, but despite telling everyone to save the planet from climate change by switching to low-energy light bulbs or using their car less, it isn't encouraging people to take the simple, everyday action of choosing organic food.

Come on Gordon, you know organic is better for people and better for the planet - so why don't you tell everyone else? Are you just running scared of agribusiness, GM and pesticide companies?

So feed Gordon an organic breakfast, it will cheer him up, give him the courage to stand up to agribusiness, and help save the planet!

The Soil Association will use the final tally of breakfasts fed to Gordon to put pressure on the Government to get behind organic.

Organic Living Can Improve Your Health

All over the world, more and more people are turning to organic food and organic living in a bid to improve their health. Some 'so called experts' doubt the benefits of organic living but it is the personal stories that prove them wrong. Here is an inspiring letter i have received:

Hi Charlotte,

I found your details on the Forward Ladies website and decided to tell you my story.

I have always suffered from severe asthma and have been hospitalised on quite a few occasions over the years. I also suffered from hayfever and various chest complaints. Last year my husband was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and I was given a glucose tolerance test and told that I was dangerously close to the onset diabetes (type2).

We decided to make a serious change to the they way we lived our lives - starting with our eating habits. We researched the best ways to combat our respective illnesses and suppliers in the region who could meet our needs. We now eat totally organically, using local suppliers and...well the changes have been truly remarkable.

I have not had a asthma attack (or related illness) in over a year, the onset of diabetes has disappeared and my husband has managed to holt the spread of the psoriatic arthritis. We feel wonderful, better than ever. We have more energy to exercise, have lost weight and we love nothing more than visiting organic food producers on the weekend to stock up. We are also saving money by not visiting the supermarkets and feeling that we need to fill the trolley! We eat seasonally and almost entirely fresh produce.

Eating organically is not difficult, nor is it expensive. The health benefits are measurable and the future outlook that it has provided for myself and my family is something that we could never have hoped for.

I wish you the all the very best for your business venture, I know that this is an area that is just going to grow and grow. I will certainly be visiting your site to use the directory in the future.

Best Wishes

Carly Hames

Why not try……An Organic Box Scheme

A great way to get fresh, local and organic fruit and vegetables is to sign up for an organic box scheme. You contact the company  and decide what size box you want, which will be delivered to your house weekly. Box schemes are good because you get fresh seasonal organic produce, and usually the prices work out cheaper too. Plus, you get the added excitement of not knowing what you are going to receive, it is like getting a mystery present every week. Sometimes you may not even recognise what fruit or veg you have, we have had some fun guessing games. It also means you will quickly increase your recipe repertoire in the bid to use up all your veg. And just think how much healthier you and your family will be. Visit www.whyorganic.org for more information.
